What is the typical lifespan of a septic system?

Septic tanks typically have a lifespan of 40-60 years, barring any damage or misuse. Damage may occur if something heavy collapses or cracks the tank. Misuse includes excessive grease or chemicals that can deteriorate the tank.

Septic drain fields generally last around 20-30 years unless damaged or affected by groundwater. Damage can result from roots, vehicle traffic that crushes drain lines, or grease and sewage clogs from inadequate tank cleaning.
